Job Summary

The Accessibility Engineer plays a pivotal role in the intersection of accessibility and engineering excellence. This position is centered around developing industry leading accessibility tools, providing specialized engineering training and bootcamps, and conducting thorough accessibility assessments for websites and applications. The Accessibility Engineer leads the charge in building innovative solutions that not only meet but exceed accessibility standards such as WCAG, Section 508, and ADA.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Deliver specialized training sessions to engineers, emphasizing accessibility best practices and seamlessly integrating them into the engineering workflow.
  • Showcase and enhance strong front-end skills, applying a deep understanding of common programming languages to ensure the development of highly accessible digital products.
  • Spearhead the development of tools crafted to elevate the accessibility of digital products, contributing to a seamless and inclusive user experience.
  • Identifies and helps create accessibility tools, training, documents for staff training.
  • Identify, document, and address barriers and challenges affecting the engineering aspects of accessibility, fostering effective communication and targeted remediation efforts.
  • Collaborate closely with design, development, and content teams, offering expert guidance and recommendations for integrating accessibility seamlessly into the engineering process.
  • Drive the resolution of accessibility issues and complaints from an engineering perspective, actively advocating for the benefits of accessible technologies.
  • Understand digital compliance with accessibility standards, guidelines, and regulations, including WCAG , Section 508, and ADA.
  • Promotes the benefits of accessible technologies.
  • Explores the accessibility industry landscape to identity opportunities for innovative technical solutions.
  • Proactively identifies procurement and revenue opportunities for the continued growth of the company and its services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the COO and/or CEO.

Required Skills

  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of accessibility technologies, tools, and processes to ensure compliance within engineering practices.
  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in common programming languages to effectively implement accessibility solutions within the engineering workflow.
  • Policy Knowledge: Understands accessibility laws and regulations such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508 to create and enforce policies.  Works with policy advisors to interpret and promote approved legislative, and regulatory standards.
  • Human Centered Design: Empathizes with users to create customer-oriented solutions.
  • Managing Through Systems: Designs sustainable processes and procedures for monitoring and managing work. Manages work through processes and other people.
  • Relationship Management: Builds and sustains trusting relationships, fosters collaboration, and builds consensus around complex issues.
  • Communication: Listens well, effectively conveys messages to diverse audiences both orally and in writing, and effectively confronts demanding situations.
  • Strategic Thinking: Thinks critically about the future, anticipates situations, and plans actions to reach goals considering those situations.

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in information technology.
  • Experience: 2 -3 years of working on accessibility projects, collaborating with development teams, conducting accessibility audits, or implementing accessibility solutions.
  • Travel: While a remote position, flexible and willingness to travel for critical client meetings.
  • Background Check: Complete a successful background check.
